 What are facial lines ?

Facial lines are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown.  As the skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated contraction of the facial muscle may cause visible lines and wrinkles, even when the muscles are at rest.

What muscles can be treated ?

Frown Lines,  Brow Lines, Crows Feet, Brow Lift, Kylie Kicks,  Neck rings, Sweating

What is Botox ?

Botox is a preparation of purified botulinium toxin A which is grown using modern methods of cultivation.  It is combined with sodium chloride (salt) and synthetic human albumen (protein).  It has been used safely in ophthalmology (eye treatment) and for excessive sweating for over 10 years and at our northfield practice for over 5 years.

 How does it work ?

When small doses of Botox are injected into the skin, Botox blocks the action of the nerves that supply the muscle.  The muscle contraction is reduced allowing the skin to relax and the lines to soften.  The effects of Botox wear off after a few months, therefore, the treatment has to be repeated if the desired effect is to be maintained.  A small amount of Botox is injected into the individual facial muscle responsible for the lines using a tiny needle.  The injections are virtually painless.

What should I expect following an injection ?

Mild redness of the skin may occur which may last for a few days.  You will not notice any effect from the Botox for around 3 – 4 days, but the greatest effect is seen after 2 – 3 weeks.

How many treatments will I need ?

In some cases more than one treatment is required to achieve the optimum effect from the Botox.  It is difficult to predict the outcome of each individual case after the first treatment.  Injections are usually repeated every 3 to 6 months.  Through repeated injection the muscles become generally weaker and the time between injections will increase.

What will happen if I miss or stop the injection ?

Nothing will happen if an injections is messed, except that some of the lines will recur.  If you want to stop the treatment for whatever reason, the relaxing effect will eventually wear off and the muscles will return to the way they were before treatment.  So will the lines !

A free consultation prior to your first treatment will be arranged and you will be given the opportunity to discuss any questions you may have.  A further appointment will then be given for your treatment.  You will be asked to sign a consent form before your first treatment.

The Facts About Acid Erosion

24th March 2011

ACID EROSION OF YOUR TEETH

We get a lot of questions about acid erosion at our Northfield Practice, especially since there are a lot of products being advertised on TV to help with this problem.  So, we thought we would put together a small Q&A blog of our own which we hope you find useful.

What is acid erosion?

Tooth erosion is different from tooth decay in that the bacteria in the plaque are not involved.  Instead acids from some foods and many drinks attack the enamel on the surface of the tooth directly.  If this happens often or, over a long period of time, it can gradually wear tooth enamel down and can eventually cause shallow depressions to develop in the teeth.

Although mild erosion may not give rise to any symptoms, in severe cases erosion can make the teeth more sensitive and cause pain after consuming hot or cold foods and drinks.  The teeth may also become unsightly.

  Who is affected?

Erosion is becoming an increasing problem in both adults and children.  Baby teeth have thinner enamel and dentine layers than adult teeth and these are worn away more quickly by contact with acid.

The teeth may become smaller and have smooth “saucer” shaped depressions.  Frequent fizzy drinks, fruit juices and acidic food will cause tooth erosion.

Another cause of erosion is chronic vomiting, where gastric acid from the stomach comes into contact with the teeth.  This can occur in several medical conditions including eating disorders and even during pregnancy.

Erosion can also be seen in people suffering from a hiatus hernia who have frequent reflux of gastric acid into the mouth or indeed people who suffer from chronic indigestion or “heartburn”.

What types of food and drink contain acid?

  • Any type of fizzy drink for example cola or lemonade
  • Citrus fruit drinks such as orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit even if diluted
  • Any sour fruit such as lemons and plumbs
  • Vinegar
  • Pickles, such as onions and gherkins.
  • Yogurt
  • Cider, dry wine and some larger beers
  • Herbal teas
  • Vitamin C Supplements

How can acid erosion of the teeth be prevented?

Always limit acid foods or drinks to mealtimes only and finish the meal with a little cheese or milk (this will neutralise the acid more rapidly)

Avoid acid foods and drinks immediately before going to bed and during the night

Fruit juices and squashes should not be given to infants from a feeding bottle as a comforter

Do not “swish” fizzy drinks around the mouth before swallowing

If acid enters the mouth, rinse with water and do not brush your teeth.  This will wear away the softened tooth more quickly

Avoid tooth brushing after a meal including something acidic.  It is better either to clean your teeth before the meal or to delay tooth brushing until bedtime that day, or before breakfast the next morning

What will my dentist do about erosion?

Try to establish the cause by asking questions about your health and diet.

Fluoride mouth rinses and varnishes may be recommended by your dentist to help with sensitivity to hold and cold.  A desensitising toothpaste may also be advised.

The dentist will discuss the treatment options with you.

If this Q&A blog has left you with more questions, then give us a call.  If you are worried about your teeth because of acid erosion or any other dental problems, then call and arrange to have a dental examination.  If this blog has answered your questions and put your mind at ease . . . glad we could help.

DO YOU RUSH YOUR BRUSH ?

Have you ever timed yourself to see how long you brush your teeth for?  If you did you would probably be surprised how short a time you spend.

Ideally you should spend 2 minutes brushing your teeth.  You may have noticed that most power brushes now come with a 2 minute timer to maximise your dental health.

It’s not just the time you spend with your brush that counts though, it’s also your brushing technique.

Start by flossing your teeth, or using an interproximal brush such as the Tepe range.

This removes trapped bits of food from between your teeth, allows the toothpaste to flow in between and most importantly cleans the gum pockets where the brush can’t reach.

Then, in your mind, divide your mouth into quarters and spend 30 second brushing each quarter.

Hold your toothbrush gently, you should not apply pressure, this can not only irritate the gum and cause recession, but it also renders brushing less effective as the bristles simply “skim” across the surface of the teeth without probing in between the teeth.

Always use a good quality toothpaste containing fluoride (and that you like the taste of!)  Remember to gently brush at the gum line, the back of the teeth and the biting surface.

After your two minutes are up, rinse your mouth, rinse your toothbrush and stand it up on its handle to dry.

 What about children ?

Encourage children to brush their own teeth but make sure you are checking their work afterwards!  Place a pea sized amount of paste on the brush yourself as children may use too much and swallow the excess which can mottle the teeth.

Youngsters under 5 should always use a toothpaste containing at least 1000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride. something

Are YOU at Risk ?

Gum disease . . . it’s often looked upon as an embarrassing inconvenience we have to put up with.  After all, most people don’t class it as a “real” disease at all.

Well it’s time to think again because gum disease has been linked with . . .

 Heart Disease

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke

Periodontal disease is often silent, meaning symptoms may not appear until an advanced stage of the disease. However, warning signs of periodontal disease can include the following:

Red, swollen or tender gums or other pain in your mouth

  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food
  • Gums that are receding, causing the teeth to look longer than before
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pus between your gums and teeth
  • Sores in your mouth
  • Persistent bad breath

Gum disease is caused by plaque

Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth and gums every day. Many of the bacteria in plaque are completely harmless, but there are some that have been shown to be the main cause of gum disease. To prevent and treat gum disease, you need to make sure you remove all the plaque from your teeth every day. This is done by brushing and flossing.

It is now known that the bacteria go straight to the bloodstream and are now known to be “independent factors” in causing heart disease – even if the person is fit and healthy.

Professor Howard Jenkinson from the University of Bristol, working with the Royal College of Surgeons, made the discovery after examining how blood cells are affected by harmful bacteria.

Professor Jenkinson said: “Cardiovascular disease is currently the biggest killer in the Western world.

Oral bacteria such as Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis are common infecting agents, and we now recognise that bacterial infections are an independent risk factor for heart diseases.  In other words it doesn’t matter how fit, slim or healthy you are, you’re adding to your chances of getting heart disease by having bad teeth.”

The findings suggest why antibiotics do not always work in the treatment of infectious heart disease.

Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease

Gum Disease Fact & Fallacy

FALLACY: Tooth loss is a natural part of aging.

FACT: With good oral hygiene and regular professional care, your teeth are meant to last a lifetime.

FALLACY: People who have gum disease are “dirty” and don’t brush their teeth.

FACT: Research proves that up to 30% of the population may be genetically susceptible to gum disease, these people may be six times more likely to develop periodontal disease.  Also many people brush regularly, but have a poor technique; others have excellent brushing techniques but are unaware that their dietary habits are affecting their gum health.

FALLACY: Gum disease is a minor infection.

FACT: The amount of tissue in the mouth is equivalent to the skin on your arm from the wrist to the elbow. If this area was red, swollen and infected, you would visit the doctor. Gum disease is not a small infection as well as possible changes in your appearance, breath, and ability to chew food; potentially overall health can be affected too.

FALLACY: Bleeding gums are normal.

FACT: Gums should not bleed; think of gum tissue as the skin on your hand. If your hands bled every time you washed them, you would know something is wrong and you would seek professional help to do something about it.

How we Can Help . . .

The dentists, hygienists and nurses at Hilltop Dental Spa are aware of the very real health problems that can be associated with gum disease and that is why we carefully examine your gums every six months and record our findings.

Our gum health charts measure the depth of the pockets around each individual tooth.

A pocket is the gap between the side of your tooth and the surrounding gum; the deeper the pocket the more likelihood of debris and bacteria collecting in the pocket.

Untreated pockets of more than 3mm or more can lead to gum disease.

By monitoring these pockets twice yearly we can advise you on any deterioration or improvement.

 Hygienist Appointments

We may recommend you see a dental hygienist every six months for professional cleaning to remove plaque deposits from between the teeth and under the gums, the hygienist can also give you great advice on brushing and flossing techniques to help your teeth and gums and dietary advice.

A hygienist appointment for maintenance and routine care is usually 20 minutes long; for those needing a little more help 30 minute appointments are available; and up to an hour for those who have the greatest need.

Some patients may require 2 or even 3 visits initially to get the disease under control, but by following the hygienist’s advice on home care this soon settles and bi-yearly visits are enough to keep the disease from re-occurring.
