Poor oral health with gum disease and dental decay is often not painful so that many people are unaware that they need dental care. This is one of the main reasons why regular dental checkups are advised.
The dentist will also be checking the health of the of your mouth and the head and neck by what is known as a soft tissue examination. Although rare oral cancer kills several thousand people in the UK every year. Poor periodontal health is associated with both diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How frequently you attend for a checkup is recommended by what are known as NICE guidelines. NICE stands for the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence. It’s role is to examine all the current evidence on treatments and drugs and make recommendations.
NICE advises that people should attend their dentist on a regular basis in some cases as regularly as every 3 months and in other cases 6,9,12 months or even only every 2 years. This is based on ‘risk factors’ such as wether you smoke, drink alcohol excessively which increases the risk of oral cancer or have had a previous history of a high level of dental decay or gum disease.
At the end of your course of treatment at Hilltop Dental Spa we will recommend when you should return for a further checkup depending on how likely we consider it is that you will develop oral health problems.
