Hygienists at Hilltop Dental Spa.

Our team of 3 established hygienists are available for 20, 30 and 40 minute appointments which include calculus removal, stain removal (available on request) dietary advice and home care advice.

Even the most careful of brushers will find they need a scale and polish from time to time. Soft plaque becomes hardened calculus over a relatively short period of time, especially in hard to reach places and just below the gum. Once calculus has formed it requires removing by a dental professional to avoid gum disease which in turn can lead to bad breath, bleeding gums, and in advanced cases of gum disease, tooth loss.

Calculus causes the gum to shrink away from the tooth creating a pocket. Untreated the gums will continue to shrink back making the tooth appear longer, and the bone supporting the tooth will be lost causing the tooth to become loose.

As well as keeping your smile fresh, clean and healthy, good periodontal care also helps to keep your body healthy.

Research has shown that gum disease is linked with heart disease, low birth weight in babies, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Your dentist will carefully examine your gums at each routine dental examination and will advise you of the type and frequency of periodontal care you require.
