Gum Disease and Its Treatment at Hilltop Dental Spa

Gum disease (Periodontal disease) is the most frequent cause of tooth loss in adults. It is known as a multi-factorial disease as there are many different causes. Good oral hygiene with daily brushing and cleaning carefully between the teeth with a toothbrush or floss is very important to prevent gum disease. Your general health is also important as uncontrolled diabetes and other illnesses affect gum health. We also know that there is a genetic factor, so that if parents have gum disease it is more likely that their children will suffer with gum disease.

Smoking makes gum disease more likely as does stress. During pregnancy the hormonal changes make gum disease more likely. Gum disease is a major cause of bad breath (halitosis) due to the bleeding from the gums. This can be prevented by good oral hygiene and periodontal therapy. Often people don’t have a good brushing and inter-dental cleaning technique and this can be significantly improved with advice from the dentist and hygienist. The improved oral hygiene combined with thorough scaling and polishing with our hygienist can significantly improve your oral health and comfort.
